Luis Rodriguez gana WPT UK

Spaniard Luis Rodriguez Cruz has become the latest player to join the elite WPT Champions Club.

After beating Christopher Yong heads-up,  Luis Rodriguez, alias Turko_man won £200.000 prize and has carved his name in poker history as the latest WPT Champions Club member. Spaniard player Nabil Cardoso was third (£90k).

After five days of superb tournament poker, Luis Rodriguz has won the World Poker Tour Main Event and added his name to a list of winners on the top table of global poker. Besides WPT UK  first-place prize of £200,000  he won a 15.000$ worth ticket to play WPT Tournament of Champions).

The partypoker WPT UK £2,200 Main Event took place at Dusk Till Dawn Poker & Casino Nottingham and  attracted a field of 522, who generated an overall prize pool of £1,044,000, slightly overpassing the initially announced guaranteed prize pool of £1 million.

The event’s official six-handed final table was played on Sunday, kicking off with Nabil Cardoso as the chip leader and Cruz being among the shortest stacks. The six remaining survivors did not waste time at all. The first elimination occurred only six hands after cards had been thrown in the air. It then took 39 more hands for the names of the two heads-up opponents to become clear. Cruz had to face Christopher Yong in a final two-handed battle.

Heads-up began with Chris Yong staying in command and maintaining his 2:1 chip lead. But that did not last long, Rodriguez took back a few chips early on then made what was, in any tournament at any level, a superb call, when he called 700,000 chips on the river with queen-high against a strong bet from Yong. Suddenly, Rodriguez was level and Yong was visibly affected. Every time he tried to fight back, the deck rewarded a serious of brilliant plays from Rodriguez, calling with bottom pair, playing the button expertly and then catching pocket aces twice in four hands to leave Yong on the brink of defeat after less than an hour of a friendly yet fierce duel.

The Spanish player won £200,000 and his name will go onto the famous WPT Main Event trophy! Yong left in 2nd place for a consolation prize of £135,000 and start-of-the-day chip leader Nabil Cardoso finished 3rd for £90,000.
