Poker Cheating & Scandals: The Most Infamous Cases

Poker is a game of strategy and skill, but throughout history, some players have attempted to cheat their way to huge wins. From casino fraud to high-stakes online scandals, certain cases have shaken the poker world and led to new security measures and rule changes.

In this article, we’ll revisit the biggest cheating scandals in poker history, how they were exposed, and what lessons we can learn in 2025.

1️⃣ The Superuser Scandal – Ultimate Bet & Absolute Poker (2007-2008)

What happened?
Employees at Ultimate Bet and Absolute Poker were caught using "superuser" accounts that allowed them to see opponents’ hole cards during online games. This gave them an unfair advantage, leading to millions of dollars in stolen winnings.

How it was discovered:
✔️ Players noticed suspicious betting patterns.
✔️ Leaked hand history data showed impossible plays.
✔️ An investigation revealed that Russ Hamilton (1994 WSOP Champion) was behind the fraud.

This scandal led to major improvements in online poker security, including advanced fraud detection systems.

2️⃣ Mike Postle’s Live Stream Cheating Scandal (2019)

What happened?
Mike Postle was dominating live-streamed cash games at Stones Gambling Hall, making perfect hero calls and avoiding every cooler. His win rate was suspiciously high, leading to allegations of cheating.

How it was discovered:
✔️ Poker player Veronica Brill publicly called out Postle on Twitter.
✔️ Experts analyzed hours of footage and saw that Postle was frequently looking at his phone during hands.
✔️ It was suspected that he was receiving real-time hole card information through a hidden device.

Although the lawsuit against him was dismissed, Postle's reputation was permanently damaged, and the case remains one of poker's most controversial moments.

3️⃣ Ali Imsirovic & Jake Schindler’s High-Stakes Collusion (2022-2023)

What happened?
Ali Imsirovic and Jake Schindler, two of the top high-stakes tournament players, were accused of colluding and using banned software in online poker.

How it was discovered:
✔️ Other high-stakes players noticed near-perfect playing styles.
✔️ Phil Galfond and other pros analyzed their stats and found suspicious betting patterns.
✔️ Multiple live tournament organizers banned both players due to suspected cheating.

This scandal reinforced the need for integrity even at the highest levels of poker.

4️⃣ The Fake Chip Scandal – Borgata Casino (2014)

What happened?
During a Borgata Casino tournament, player Christian Lusardi attempted to cheat by introducing counterfeit poker chips into play.

How it was discovered:
✔️ Players noticed that there were more chips in play than officially registered.
✔️ Security footage traced the chips back to Lusardi.
✔️ In a bizarre twist, Lusardi tried to flush the fake chips down his hotel toilet, clogging the plumbing and leading to his arrest.

Lusardi was sentenced to prison, and the scandal highlighted the importance of strict casino security.

5️⃣ Black Friday – The Fall of Online Poker Giants (2011)

What happened?
On April 15th, 2011—now known as "Black Friday"—the U.S. Department of Justice shut down PokerStars, Full Tilt Poker, and Absolute Poker, accusing them of fraud and money laundering.

How it was discovered:
✔️ The U.S. government investigated transactions of the largest poker sites.
✔️ Full Tilt Poker was exposed for running a Ponzi scheme, failing to keep player funds separate from operational money.
✔️ PokerStars paid massive fines and continued operating, but Full Tilt and Absolute Poker collapsed.

Black Friday known as online poker crack, changed online poker forever, forcing players to move to regulated platforms.

How to Avoid Cheating & Scams in Poker in 2025

If you play online or live poker, it's important to protect yourself from potential fraud:

Play only on licensed, reputable platforms.
Use tracking software (Holdem Manager, PokerTracker) to analyze suspicious patterns.
Avoid private games with strangers, where collusion is more common.
Be skeptical of players with unrealistically high win rates.

The best defense against poker scams is knowledge and careful game analysis. Do you know of any other poker scandals that should be on this list?
