World's top scorers: the players with the most goals in history

World Cups are the most followed sporting events in the world. The expectation they generate is maximum, and they bring together some of the best players in the world. The last one to be held, the Qatar World Cup 2022, was a show that swept the world in views and allowed top players to face each other in some memorable matches that will go down in history.

World top scorers: who are they?

World Cup records have been kept since 1930. Since then, data from the World Cups have always been collected to form a ranking of the world's top scorers of each edition, in order to go down in soccer history and leave their name for posterity.

Miroslav Klose

At the top of the table, we find the Polish Miroslav Klose, who accumulates a total of 16 goals scored in different World Cups and who has been considered, by pure mathematics, as the top scorer of the last century. He was part of the German national team and his role as a goal scorer was such that he was soon nicknamed "the German bomber".

Ronaldo Nazário

The legendary Real Madrid player in the glorious years of FC Barcelona ranks second in the ranking of the top scorers in World Cups in history. He has been part of the Brazilian national soccer team, and accumulates a total of 15 goals scored in World Cup matches.

Gerd Müller

A native of Bavaria, Müller was one of the players with the highest goal scoring record in a season in his active years, as well as being one of the world's all-time top scorers, holding third place in the absolute ranking of top scorers in World Cup matches.

From 1967 to 2021 he has recurrently obtained several distinctions in recognition of his career, being one of the best German-born footballers of the last century and having participated in up to seven international soccer championships with F. C. Bayern and the German national team, both in the 1972 European Championship and in the 1974 World Cup.

Just Fontaine

With 13 goals scored in the 1958 World Cup in six matches, Just Fontaine became one of the all-time top scorers in the history of the game and one of the greatest French-born players of all time.

In 2012, he earned his last individual honor, being inducted into the International Football Hall of Fame and being named an Officer of the Legion of Honor a year later.

Lionel Messi

Still active, Messi is considered one of the world's top scorers and holds the record for goals scored in a season, scoring 50 goals in the 2011-2012 season. As a player of the Argentine national team, his records have been equally impressive, accumulating 13 goals scored in World Cups.

Messi is a player of records, as he also holds the most number of golden balls won with a total of seven in the years 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2015, 2019 and 2021.
